About the Free Knit Headband

This free knit headband pattern is designed to practice wrap and turn short rows. It is knit in the round and fits most heads from big kids to adults. You’ll want to make sure and use a yarn with plenty of elasticity so it snaps back into shape instead of stretching out after wearing.

The short row shaping in this headband makes the top wider than the bottom. This shape makes it comfortable to wear and helps it stay in place.

This is one of my older patterns. I’ve been on a hair accessories kick lately, though. You may want to see my ear warmer headband, scrunchies, and hair ties knitting tutorials.

Skills

knit in the round, knit, purl, wrap and turn short rows

Materials

  • Yarn: ~30 yards (27.5 m) sport weight
  • Needles: US 6 16-inch circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Notions: stitch marker, yarn needle

Gauge

1×1 rib over 20 sts = average gauge of 3.25 – 3.75 in (8 – 9.5cm)

To get the average gauge, measure 20 sts in 1×1 rib at rest, then measure fully stretched. Add the two measurements together, then divide that answer by 2.
